Brien Holden


Brien Holden is Professor of Optometry at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), the Founder and Director of the Cornea and Contact Lens Research Unit at the UNSW School of Optometry and Vision Science, and Director of the Vision Cooperative Research Centre. He is the author of almost 200 refereed papers and 20 book chapters, and he holds two patents. Since 1973 Professor Holden has been President of the International Association of Contact Lens Educators, and the International Society for Contact Lens Research.  Professor Holden was awarded a Special Recognition Award medal from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology in 2002, and received Honorary Degrees of Doctor of Science from the State University of New York in 1994, the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1998, the City University London in 1999, and the University of Durban-Westville, South Africa in 2002. Apart from these academic awards, Professor Holden also received the Medal of the Order of Australia from the Australian Government in 1997 for contributions to eyecare research and education.
